The Chapter

Named for the man who mapped the sky

Sir Edward Appleton was born in Bradford in 1892 and won the 1947 Nobel Prize in Physics for discovering the upper band of the ionosphere — the layer that still carries his name.

His motto could have been ours: rise to high places. We took it literally. Our ship is named for him, and our welcome is built on a line of his we rather like — enthusiasm required, skill optional.

One crew, two badges

Leeds Bradford Starfleet

We're known two ways: the USS Appleton, our STARFLEET International chapter, and LBSF — Leeds Bradford Starfleet, the friendly local face of the same crew.

Same people. Same welcome. Turn up as LBSF, or formally enlist with SFI and join the wider fleet — your call, no pressure.

Life aboard

What crewing with us actually looks like

Meetings

Monthly, on a three-on / one-off rhythm. In person with a camera on, so remote crew never miss the muster.

Content

Something to natter about every day — posts, chatter and transmissions across our channels, not just once a month.

Command team

Reachable most days by email or on Discord. Real people who'll happily answer the daft first questions.

Games & events

Game nights, anniversary dos and holiday specials through the year — plus the odd away mission.

Come as you are

Nervous about a first meeting? So was everyone here.

You don't have to speak, dress up, or know your stardates. Meetings are hybrid, so you can join from the sofa with your camera off until you're ready.

Loads of us start on Discord first — lurk, say hello when it suits, turn up in person if and when you fancy it. No commitment, no funny handshakes.

"I rate enthusiasm even above professional skill."
