First contact for first-timers: what a meeting's actually like
By the Command Crew · 14 May 2026 · 4 min read
If you've read this far, chances are you're thinking about coming to a meeting and feeling a bit funny about it. That's completely normal — nearly everyone here felt exactly the same before their first one. So here's the honest, unglamorous truth about what actually happens.
You won't have to perform
There's no quiz on the door, no uniform, no expectation that you can name every episode ever made. You can be a lifelong Trekkie or someone who's seen one film and fancied a natter — both are equally welcome. Enthusiasm is the only entry requirement, and even that's flexible.
Turning up
Come whenever suits. If you're early, someone will make you a brew. If you're late, someone will wave you over. You don't need to announce yourself or explain that it's your first time — though if you do, you'll get an even warmer welcome.
Joining from home
Not up to a room full of people? Every meeting has a camera on so you can join from the sofa, camera off, mic muted, just listening. Loads of our crew started exactly that way and worked up to turning up in person when it felt right. There's no rush and no wrong pace.
What we actually do
A few minutes of chapter notices — what's coming up, any fundraising, that sort of thing — and then the good stuff: games, plans, and cheerful sci-fi rambling that wanders wherever it likes. You can join in or just enjoy it from the sidelines.
That's genuinely it. When you're ready, find the next meeting or drop the Captain a line — we'll save you a seat.
